Burial Rites

In no way asked for by either author or publisher, just me fangirling a book I loved.

I read Burial Rites by Hannah Kent in 2019, and it was one of those books which stuck with me. So much so that I re-read it, which is extremely rare (why re-read when there are so many books I’ve never read?). It was also a great mark making and design exercise without the pressure to produce a finished piece of saleable work, so I saw an opportunity, picked up my tools and got going.

The image is based on elements from the story, woven together to create a pleasingly mysterious cover picture: a raven with a brooch in one clawed foot, on a windswept hillside beside a stone which - if you put it under your tongue - may or may not be magical.

I’ve always loved the simplicity of a linocut book cover. There are loads of fabulous examples in any good bookshop near you, and it is an ambition of mine to one day join the canon. But for now, here’s me throwing my hat into the ring with this offering.
