The Sitooterie

A sitooterie is a northern word meaning a place to go and sit outside, and this is a linocut print of my parents’ one. Made during the Coronavirus lockdown of spring 2020, I came to sit and find peace in their sitooterie once restrictions had lifted enough to allow me to do so. I loved watching their spring flower garden beginning to grow, and it gave me a glimpse of positivity in an otherwise bleak time

A sitooterie is a northern name for a place in the garden where you can go to just…sit. If it feels bizarre in your head, try saying it aloud and I promise it’ll make more sense. And you’ll want one.

This one belongs to my mum and dad. With lockdown restrictions gradually easing, and good weather following us through spring, I started drawing in their garden. Dad built this one for mum earlier in the year, and has spent the last few weeks planting flowers in front of it for her to enjoy.

A reimagination of my linocut print The Sitooterie, cropped to a perfect square. Published by PaperBird, these lovely cards come with a wonderful surprise cut out and keep bookmark on the reverse. The Sitooterie was made in my parents’ back garden during the coronavirus lockdown of spring and summer 2020. It’s a tribute to the simple joys of home and garden which we all discovered whilst we stayed at home, and only got together outdoors. The Sitooterie also marks a time in midsummer when the potential of a garden is just about to peak.
