The solid concrete lookout tower at the top of one antler of our island, looking out to sea through lidless eyes since 1940. These buildings fascinate me: their permanence, evidence of human intervention in an otherwise wild landscape. I love the sharp angles, the careful, utilitarian design and shape of each one, and the way they stand defiant against impending invasion as much as impending erosion and the passage of time. This tower is now right at the edge. I doubt it’s in imminent risk, but the earth shelf which holds it out of the reach of the sea is going, little by little, decade by decade. And one day it will be gone.
